Helping a child learn to read is one of the most satisfying volunteer experiences! This committee is focused on improving literacy in the Thompson School District in grades 1-3 with the long term goal of reducing the high school dropout rate. About 25% of students are below grade level in reading. The goal is to help the District bring all students up to grade level in reading ability by the end of third grade. One effective strategy is to team Rotarians and other community members with 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade teachers to volunteer for an hour/week (or more) tutoring students with low reading ability 1:1 during the school day. We are working with several schools that have students in need. Work with teachers to investigate how to best use technology to assist literacy improvement.
