Charity Walk through Scotland to benefit Polio

Posted by Kellie Tovar

Image    PDG Stuart “Stu” Palmer’s grandfather contracted polio as a boy in Archibold, Ohio, in the early 1900s.  Now Palmer of Jackson Hole is determined to do what he can to help eradicate this dreaded disease.
Stu, and wife Susie, will begin their two week long-distance walk through the Highlands of Scotland on June 7th.  They will cover about 150 miles and they have dedicated this walk in memory of Stu’s grandfather, Dwight Mignin.  Their goal is to raise $500,000 for the End Polio Now campaign and they are asking all Rotarians of District 5440 to join them in giving to Rotary's polio eradication effort.  Please consider making a pledge to help meet the Palmers' goal.
For Stu and Susie it will be a time to remember someone they loved with the hope that polio will never again afflict another child.

You can follow Stu and Susie as they walk in Scotland on the D5440 website.
You can make your pledge to help eradicate polio by contacting Judy Boggs, District PolioPlus Chair, at 970-218-0943 or via
email.

IGNITE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is our District doing the IGNITE program?

The IGNITE program is intended to reverse the ten year downward trend in Rotary’s U. S. membership growth in the United States. While District 5440 is one of the few districts with net increases in membership, the IGNITE program will have real benefit for all of our clubs, but especially those are  struggling to attract or maintain members.

What is the IGNITE program?

This program is a comprehensive membership recruitment, retention and extension presentation compiling helpful materials in all areas.  It is especially effective because it places valuable membership materials at the fingertips of clubs for review, choice, and use.  It’s an impressive accumulation of materials to help all clubs improve their membership programs.

How is the IGNITE program being implemented in District 5440?
Governor Mike has established a club recognition award for
all clubs who achieve Premiere Club status in the 2012-2013 IGNITE program.  That means your club establishes your membership count as of July 1, 2012 (the beginning of this Rotary year) and checks off the various activities your club has completed on the IGNITE Club Score Sheet.  (The number of points required to achieve Premiere Club status depends on your membership size as of July 1, 2012.  For instance,  if your club had 30 members you will need to log 300 points on your IGNITE Scorecard by April 30, 2013 to achieve the IGNITE governor’s Premiere Club Recognition Award.)

When does all this take place?

Activities:  Between 7/1/12 and 4/30/13

Application:  Score sheets are to be sent to Kellie Tovar by May 1st.

Award:  Recognition awards will be presented by Governor Mike at District Conference in Steamboat Springs May 30-June 1, 2013.

Where can I get more information?

IGNITE Score Sheets can be downloaded from the District 5440 website under Service/Membership:  IGNITE Premier Club Spreadsheet Citation Tracker

IGNITE Materials can be found at the same location.  Start with Ignite Premier Club Criteria.

Proud to be a Rotarian

Posted by Kellie Tovar

Over the past year I have served as district governor for more than 3,200 Rotarians in 53 Wyoming, Northern Colorado, Eastern Idaho and Western Nebraska.   It has been a rare privilege and a life-changing experience, visiting each of these clubs and seeing the difference they are making through service in their communities, and in many cases, other parts of the world.

This year’s Rotary District Conference was held last week in Steamboat Springs.  Our theme at the conference and throughout the year has been ROTARY PROUD.
-Proud because our Rotary Foundation, funded almost completely by Rotarians, is second only to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in size and annual grants and aid to national and international humanitarian projects.  Last year alone The Rotary Foundation disbursed more than $150 million to worthwhile projects. With few exceptions, these funds were distributed and managed by individual Rotary clubs.
-Proud because Rotary made a commitment some 35 years ago to save children throughout the world from the effects of polio.  At the time more than 300,000 contracted polio every year!  In the past year less than 1,000 cases have been reported thanks to Rotary’s efforts to immunize well over two billion children!  Despite Rotary contributions of close to one billion dollars and hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours, polio still exists in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria where Rotarians, national governments and world health organizations continue to fight to eradicate polio.  We are “this close” and will not give up until the job is done.
-Proud because Rotary has been engaged in world peace throughout its history.  Rotarians were instrumental in supporting the creation of the United Nations.  Since 2002 Rotary’s World Peace Fellowship program has funded more than 600 graduate-level university scholarships in peace and conflict resolution for students from 90 different countries.  (One speaker at our district conference was Peace Scholar David LaMotte.)
-Proud because Rotary stands for ethics both individually and professionally.  The Rotary Four Way Test is an essential element in Rotary membership.   (Is it the truth?  Is it fair to all concerned?  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?  Will it be beneficial to all concerned?) In recent years the Rotary Four Way Test has also been introduced to Yampa Valley grade and high schools students, and to other young people in America and throughout the world.
-Proud because Rotary is committed to service.  The number of projects underway or completed by the clubs in our district this past year is simply overwhelming.  While many of the clubs and their projects were recognized and awarded at our district conference, far more were completed without acknowledgement or fanfare.  That is the true spirit of Rotary!
